Crochet is still having a moment and Granny Squares are at the heart of it. These cute crochet clusters are foundational and fun.
The color combinations, celebrity sightings and ease of creation make Granny Square items intriguing. The repetition of the stitches can be soothing, and the types of projects never-ending. But what makes a Granny Square a Granny Square? And if you deviate, is it still a Granny Square or something else? In my Instagram Live this morning, several SMS Crew members and I discussed this very thing. Check out the full episode of the May 3rd Saturday Morning Shenanigans Show on Instagram here. If its TLDW (Too Long; Didn't Watch) I'll sum it up for you here.

We, Victoria (IG: @MichiganLady29), Nozibele (IG: @NozibeleKB), Whitney (IG: @JustWhitneyMarie) and Aishah (IG: @Road2Healthie); along with several other SMS Crew members; came to the following conclusions:
Granny Squares are specifically made of clusters of 3 Double Crochet stitches, separated by a chain and worked in a four-sided round. To avoid confusion and maintain traditional standards, anything else should have a different name. Those who are new to the stitch pattern or crocheting as a whole deserve consistencey. Changing the definition of a thing may add confusion.
Granny Square Chart We need names for some popular deviations...well we came up with Generational Squares! See the newly coined stitch pattern names and show us your samples!
Sister Squares: Clusters of 3 Single Crochet stitches, separated by a chain and worked in a four-sided round.
Aunty Squares: Clusters of 3 Half Double Crochet stitches, separated by a chain and worked in a four-sided round.
Great Granny Squares: Clusters of 3 Treble Crochet stitches, separated by a chain and worked in a four-sided round.
Shall I add visuals for the newly named squares? Let's start a trend! Comment Below!
